While self praise is no praise, the following article in August 20th issue of the Wicklow People 2008 would suggest we are doing something right.
“Coastcare” pays off at Brittas Bay”
After years of feeling as though their needs and concerns weren’t being taken on board by Wicklow County Council. Brittas Bay residents at last feel they are being listened to since the formation of the voluntary Coastcare group.
A former local community group had been calling for proper management of council land in Brittas through dealing with litter and vandalism caused by unauthorised camping, cider parties and boy racers.
However, while area councillors attended these meetings and made representations to the council on the issues raised, very little if anything seemed to be done.
The Brittas Bay Coastcare Group were formed and took matters into their own hands by voluntarily organising beach cleanups by local resident. Now all their hard work and efforts seem to be paying off.
The group asked the council for an explanation of the expenditure of car park revenue generated at Brittas. While there was no reply, for the first time in years locals noticed a sudden increase in investment by the council into car park and beach facilities.
According to Chairman, Paul Leahy: ‘they purchased a ride on mower for the car park, a quad and trailer for cleaning the beach and a litter warden and professional security presence. It was certainly encouraging to see.
Well said! Scared into action… fair play indeed.
